The Multi-Cube: The Relativity of the Observer of Person in Situation
Joke H. van Velzen
RRREaT-PT
Overview
This editorial analyzes theories of situation and person-situation entwinement in order to ask what a situation is in the actual world. An imagined data-collection session is used to separate an objective situation from the subjective perspectives, focus, and positions of the people within it. The proposed multi-cube visualizes how several observers can experience the same objective situation differently while some of their perspectives still overlap.
Topics covered
Major theories and assumptions in the debate about persons, situations, and situatedness.
How both the person and the situation continue to change during a data-collection session.
The relativity of observation and the need to define objective situation and subjective person-situation entwinement precisely.
